      据语言学家估算,现在平均每两周就有一种语言从世界上消失;到本世纪末,全世界剩下的语言将不到600种。有关专家认为,导致语言消失的主要原因是使用本族语的人数太少,加之地区经济落后和自然环境欠佳以及强势文化对弱势文化的冲击。
  全世界有150种濒危语言的使用人数不足10人。去年美国阿拉斯加最后一个会说埃雅克语的人———玛丽·史密斯去世,这一语言随之消亡。今年66岁的查尔里·孟克达是目前唯一能说澳大利亚北部地区土语———阿莫瑞达格语的人,他是从已经去世的父亲那里学会这种语言的。为了保护阿莫瑞达格语,在一家基金会的资助下,孟克达好不容易才招到两名学生。但令人遗憾的是,其中一名学生觉得这种没有文字形式的语言很难学,不到一个月就“拜拜”了。
  近年来,UNESCO一直呼吁,希望各国政府努力拯救语言文化遗产,以保护语言的多样性,因为任何一种语言的消亡无论是对使用这种语言的民族,还是对全人类来说,都是巨大的损失。
