Iran's supreme leader Khamenei has accused U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton of spreading "lies" against the Islamic republic during her tour of the Persian Gulf. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei also accused the United States of turning the region into a so-called "arms depot" to get money from countries in the region.
Iranian state media reported the remarks Wednesday.
On Tuesday, Secretary Clinton wrapped up a trip to the region aimed at gathering support for a new round of United Nations sanctions against Tehran for pressing ahead with its uranium enrichment program.
During the trip, Secretary Clinton warned that Iran may trigger a nuclear arms race if it obtains a nuclear weapon. She also raised concerns that Iran was turning into a military dictatorship because of a power shift to the country's Revolutionary Guard Corps.
