A United Nations official says Iraq's electoral commission plans to announce preliminary results from parliamentary elections on Thursday.

Iraq special representative, Ad Melkert, says he is confident the commission will be able to release the initial findings Thursday based on information he has received. Melkert spoke during a news conference in Baghdad Wednesday.

Election officials initially planned to publish preliminary results from Sunday's vote earlier this week for seats in Baghdad and some provinces. The Iraqi capital is a key electoral prize for competing factions, as it commands about one-fifth of the 325 seats in parliament.

Meanwhile, Iraq's Accountability and Justice Commission has moved to annul the votes for 55 candidates. The Shi'ite leaders of the commission say the candidates have ties to the outlawed Ba'ath Party of former leader Saddam Hussein.
