Thousands of protesters have stormed Kyrgyzstan's parliament building and set fire to the prosecutor's office in Bishkek as anti-government protests continue to sweep across the Central Asian nation.

Kyrgyzstan's government declared a state of emergency after clashes broke out Wednesday between riot police and protesters in the capital. The government says at least 17 people have been killed and 180 others wounded.

Witnesses say police first used tear gas and flash grenades before opening fire to disperse thousands of demonstrators in Bishkek. Protesters rammed through the gates of government headquarters with an armored vehicle.

Protesters also seized the country's state-owned television station. Opposition leaders say they are negotiating with the government and demanding the resignation of President Kurmanbek Bakiyev. They claim at least 100 people have been killed in the Bishkek clashes.
