Heavily armed Thai security forces laid razor wire across parts of central Bangkok on Monday to block Red Shirt protesters from taking their anti-government campaign to the city's financial hub.

An army spokesman said Monday that Thai troops are prepared to use force to stop the protesters from marching on the Silom Road business district.

The government has declared the Silom Road district off-limits to the Red Shirt protesters who have occupied a nearby shopping area in their bid to oust Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva and force new elections.

The international spokesman for the protesters says the Red Shirts have called off a massive march set for Tuesday. He did not say whether the Red Shirts had planned to march on the Silom Road business district or rally at the nearby shopping district they already occupy.
