Cuban authorities have, for a third consecutive week, prevented members of the opposition group "Ladies in White" from conducting their weekly protest march to demand the release of imprisoned relatives.

Six members of the group attended mass in Havana Sunday in preparation for the march.

After mass, a security officer told the women that they could not hold their demonstration. The women also encountered about 50 pro-government counter demonstrators.

Ladies in White was formed by the wives and mothers of 75 members of opposition groups who were arrested in a March 2003 government crackdown. Most are still in prison.

Cuban officials recently told the Ladies in White they would need to apply for a permit to hold their weekly protest. The group rejected that demand.
