Filipinos went to the polls Monday to choose a new president, congress and about 17,000 local and national officials.

As long lines formed outside several polling stations across the Philippines, the election commission extended the voting time by one hour to 7 p.m. (1100 UTC) because of problems with some of the new automated voting machines.

The election is the Philippines' first using an electronic vote-counting system. There were concerns that more than 76,000 of the new machines may not work, after a technical problem was discovered last week.

Election-related violence has left several people dead. Police say two people were killed Monday in the southern province of Maguindanao. At least five people were killed Sunday in two election-related incidents.
