Thousands of Greek workers are protesting in Athens against their government's economic austerity measures, while debate about stabilizing the euro continues in Europe.

Workers marched to the parliament in the Greek capital Thursday, and transportation and other public sector employees went on strike throughout the country. But many air traffic controllers stayed on the job, saying they did not want to hurt tourism in the struggling economy.

Elsewhere in the EU, German Chancellor Angela Merkel called for a worldwide tax on financial markets.

She told a conference in Berlin Thursday she will urge other countries at the June summit of the Group of 20 nations to implement a new tax.

Details of Ms. Merkel's proposal were not immediately clear. She also called for the creation of a European credit rating agency to rival large, private companies that rate the credit of companies and countries for investors.
