Interim Kyrgyz President Roza Otunbayeva is calling for calm in southern Kyrgyzstan, following ethnic violence that has killed at least 37 people and wounded more than 500 others.

Several homes in ethnic Uzbek neighborhoods were on fire and shooting could still be heard Friday in the city of Osh, after clashes erupted between Kyrgyz and Uzbek groups there late Thursday.

The region is a power base of former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, who was ousted in an April 7 uprising that killed 85 people.

The interim government declared a state of emergency in Osh and surrounding areas, after rioters smashed windows, looted businesses and burned cars overnight. Authorities also sent armored vehicles to the area and imposed a curfew. It was unclear how the riots erupted.

Interim President Otunbayeva told reporters in the Kyrgyz capital, Bishkek, Friday that the conflict is being fueled by various factions who want to destabilize the country.
