America's top military officer says he is "appalled" at the release of thousands of secret documents covering the last six years of the U.S.-led war in Afghanistan.

Speaking to reporters on his way from Afghanistan to Iraq Tuesday, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Navy Admiral Mike Mullen, said the unauthorized release of the papers could put U.S. troops in Afghanistan at risk.

The website WikiLeaks released the documents Sunday, which include allegations Pakistan's intelligence service, the ISI, supports some of the insurgent groups operating in Afghanistan. Mullen says "one key aspect" of the U.S. strategy is to improve relations with Pakistan so that officials there will crack down on al-Qaida and other related groups.

On Tuesday, Afghanistan's National Security Council said the leaked documents show the U.S. has ignored Pakistan's role in the Afghan insurgency.
