Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard said Tuesday her center-left Labor party is ready to govern, after retaining power by a tiny, one-seat majority.

Ms. Gillard told reporters that, given the closeness of the vote, she believes the Australian people want the government to find a common ground in the national interest.

Two weeks of political uncertainly in Australia came to an end Tuesday, with two of three independent members of parliament announcing their support for the prime minister.

Independents Tony Windsor and Robb Oakeshott said they will support the center-left Labor party. Earlier in the day, independent Bob Katter threw his support behind the opposition conservative party - called the Liberal Party.

Oakeshott said at a news conference that it was difficult to choose between the side.
