Japan has intervened in the world's currency market to weaken the yen, after it rose to a 15-year high against the U.S. dollar.Finance Minister Yoshihiko Noda told reporters Wednesday the central bank entered the currency exchange to sell the yen and buy dollars, but did not specify how much the bank had sold.

The yen traded at more than 85 to the dollar after the intervention, after earlier hitting the high of 82.87. The news sent stock prices soaring on Japan's key Nikkei index, which gained two-and-one-quarter percent by the closing bell.

Noda said the intervention was taken to contain "excessive" movements in the currency market. He vowed the government would take similar actions in the future if necessary.A strong yen makes Japanese exports more expensive in overseas markets.
