U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has held one-on-one talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank, after two days of inconclusive Mideast peace talks.Appearing beside Mr. Abbas in Ramallah Thursday, Clinton said the United States is committed to working toward a peace agreement that leads to an independent, sovereign and viable Palestinian state.

On Wednesday, Clinton met with both Mr. Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in Jerusalem for another round of direct peace talks, with neither side reporting any major breakthroughs.U.S. Mideast envoy George Mitchell described the talks as serious and substantive, and said some progress had been made on one of the most divisive issues, Israeli settlements.

The Palestinians have threatened to abandon the peace talks if Israel lifts a moratorium on building settlements in land the Palestinians want as part of a possible future state.
