A Greek court has sentenced a policeman to life in prison for murder in the 2008 shooting of a 15-year old boy whose death sparked nationwide riots.The court ruled Monday that officer Korkoneas intentionally shot teenager Grigoropoulos while on patrol in a district of Athens known for its bars and cafes. It also convicted Korkoneas' patrol partner Saraliotis of complicity in the December 2008 incident.
Korkoneas had insisted the killing was an accident, caused by the ricochet of a warning shot that he fired during an altercation with a group of youths.The shooting sparked weeks of riots by Greek youths in Athens and several other cities, in which they threw firebombs at police, torched cars and buildings and looted stores. The riots were the country's worst in decades.Authorities moved the trial of the two officers involved in the incident 120 miles northwest of Athens to the city of Amfissa for security reasons.
