Gunmen in southern Russia stormed a regional parliament Tuesday, in a brazen daylight attack that killed at least three people and wounded 17 others.
Authorities say two police officers and a government worker were killed in the attack in the Chechen capital, Grozny. Statements from Moscow and the regional presidency said two of the attackers blew themselves up and two others were killed by security forces responding to the attack.
A statement from Chechen President Kadyrov said the remaining people inside the building had been freed in a 20-minute security operation.
Russia's RIA Novosti news agency described Tuesday's attack as a "major setback" for the Kremlin, which has claimed to have brought stability to the troubled republic.
Russia has fought two wars in the past two decades against Muslim separatists in Chechnya.
