Striking French workers and disgruntled youths took to the streets of major cities Tuesday, in the latest protests against draft legislation in parliament aimed at raising the retirement age from 60 to 62.

Television footage showed riot police battling masked students in suburban Paris. The youths pelted police with projectiles and set garbage bins on fire. It was not immediately clear if there were injuries or arrests.

The strike is the sixth job action of its kind in recent weeks, forcing the cancelation of half of the flights at Paris' Orly airport and about one-third of flights at Charles de Gaulle airport. It also forced France's express train operator to cut about half of its services.

The French Senate is expected to vote this week on legislation raising the minimum retirement age to 62 and the age for full pensions from 65 to 67.
