A group of military officers in Madagascar say they have taken control of the island nation.Colonel Charles Andrianasoavina made the statement at a barracks on the outskirts of the capital Wednesday, as voters cast ballots on a new constitution. He said government institutions are dissolved, and that the military will install a committee to run the country.

The colonel was one of the main supporters of President Andry Rajoelina when Mr. Rajoelina seized power in a military-backed coup last year. There was no immediate response to Wednesday's announcement from the Rajoelina government.

Witnesses say there were no immediate signs of a military takeover on the streets of the capital, Antananarivo.
