Diplomats at the United Nations say more than 170 people have been killed in violence following Ivory Coast's disputed election.

They say there are substantiated reports of the killings, as well as instances of torture and other mistreatment. The situation in Ivory Coast was discussed Thursday by the U.N. Human Rights Council in Geneva.

On Wednesday, the United States said it is talking with African nations about boosting the 10,000 person U.N. peacekeeping force in Ivory Coast as the political crisis there continues.

U.S. officials say any move to increase the force would not be aimed at deposing incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo, but rather to deter him from using his own forces to stay in power.

Mr. Gbagbo is refusing to step down, despite intense pressure from African and Western countries that have recognized his rival, Alassane Ouattara, as the winner of last month's presidential election.
