Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is formally under investigation for paying a teenage girl for sex and abusing his power to convince police to drop charges against the 17-year-old.Mr. Berlusconi's lawyers dismissed the claims as "groundless" and said the investigation was unprecedented "interference in the prime minister's private life."

Prosecutors are examining whether the 74-year-old prime minister last year engaged in prostitution with the Moroccan nightclub dancer known as "Ruby".They are also looking into allegations that Mr. Berlusconi improperly intervened to have "Ruby" -- whose real name is Karima El Mahroug -- released from a police station after she was detained for theft. The probe comes a day after Italy's top court lifted the blanket immunity from prosecution the prime minister and other cabinet members have enjoyed while in office.
