U.S. economic growth speeded up to a 3.2 percent annual rate in the last three months of 2010. Friday's report from the Commerce Department says the world's largest economy expanded 2.9 percent for the whole year. That is a sharp improvement over 2009, when the recession saw the economy shrink more than two percent.
The improved growth comes in part from rising consumer spending, which is the driver of most U.S. economic activity. Consumers were more willing to spend as they saw a rising stock market, some gradual gains in the job situation, and reduced debts.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner says the growth shows that the economy is past the worst part of the economic crisis. But Geithner told the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, that the growth rate is still too slow to quickly bring down the U.S. jobless rate.
The U.S. jobless rate is 9.4 percent, and is expected to remain higher than usual for some time.
