Italian prosecutors have requested that Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi be put on trial immediately for allegedly paying an underage prostitute for sex and using his power to cover it up.
A judge must now decide whether to accept the request, filed Wednesday in a Milan court.
Prosecutors allege the 74-year-old Mr. Berlusconi paid for sex with a series of young women, including a Moroccan nightclub dancer known as Ruby who is at the center of the probe against the prime minister. Prosecutors say the young woman, whose real name is Karima El Mahroug, was 17 years old at the time she visited his home.
Mr. Berlusconi criticized the prosecutors' efforts to speed up the trial, saying they have a "subversive" aim to remove him from power. He has said he will not resign due to the allegations.
