[ti:Ebola- Staying Safe Against a Killer Disease] [ar:Anna Matteo] [al:Health Report] [by:www.51voa.com] [00:00.00]From VOA Learning English, [00:00.82]this is the Health Report. [00:02.76]The World Health Organization, the W.H.O., [00:06.55]says the disease Ebola is spreading in West Africa. [00:11.77]The situation frightens both local citizens and travelers. [00:17.52]There is no vaccine or special treatment. [00:22.00]And the fatality rate is very high. [00:24.95]That rate represents the number of people [00:28.64]who get sick from Ebola and then die. [00:32.54]It is difficult to stop Ebola from spreading. [00:36.39]It moves easily from person to person. [00:40.09]The disease strikes its victims through direct contact [00:44.93]with the blood or other fluids [00:48.22]from the body of an infected person. [00:51.21]For that reason Ebola patients must be kept away from other people. [00:57.19]The bodies of victims still contain the virus days after they die. [01:03.93]Local traditions and burial and funeral customs [01:08.94]also make the sickness hard to contain. [01:12.99]Doctors say it is important to identify an Ebola case early [01:18.61]to prevent others from becoming infected. [01:22.86]Patients suffer from high body temperature, bleeding and diarrhea. [01:28.83]Only a few prevention measures exist. [01:33.00]The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the U.S., [01:38.30]the C.D.C., and the W.H.O. suggest staying away [01:44.62]from countries with confirmed Ebola cases. [01:48.98]People at increased threat include those working in animal research, [01:56.05]health care workers and others caring for patients in the community. [02:01.52]As of July eighth, 2014, the W.H.O. says [02:07.83]37 death caused by Ebola were reported recently [02:13.32]in Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, [02:17.74]the three countries where the disease has been confirmed. [02:21.62]A patient in Ghana was suspected of having Ebola, [02:26.16]but tests did not show the sickness. [02:29.86]Ghanaian observers say the man has since died from unknown causes. [02:36.10]The victim was an American citizen. [02:40.15]In the past, cases of Ebola have been confirmed in the Republic of the Congo, [02:47.21]Cote d'Ivoiree, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Gabon, Sudan, and Uganda. [02:54.94]Doctors advise careful protective measures [02:58.65]if you must go to an area where Ebola exists. [03:03.33]Wash your hands often. If soap and water are not available, [03:09.19]use a hand sanitizer ¨C or cleaner -- containing at least 60 percent alcohol. [03:16.85]Avoid eating primates, bats, and bush meat or wild meat. [03:22.78]Stay away from mines and places where bats and other rodents may live. [03:29.38]If Ebola has been identified directly around you, [03:34.15]the C.D.C. and W.H.O. strongly suggest wearing protective clothing. [03:40.84]Cover your face and hands. [03:43.12]Goggles can protect the eyes. [03:46.32]Try to remove Ebola germs with cleaners that fight infection. [03:52.73]And from VOA Learning English, that's the Health Report.
