[00:00.00]A gunman opened fire on an American television news crew [00:04.12]during a ¡®live' television broadcast Wednesday morning. [00:08.25]Two people died in the attack. [00:11.55]They were identified as 24-year-old reporter Alison Parker [00:16.95]and her cameraman, 27-year-old Adam Ward. [00:21.35]Television station WDBJ says they were attacked in South Mountain Lake, [00:28.53]near the city of Roanoke in southwestern Virginia. [00:32.31]Ms. Parker was questioning a local business leader when the gunman began shooting. [00:38.87]The businesswoman was shot in the back, but survived. [00:42.20]The camera caught images of the suspected gunman. [00:45.99]They show a man wearing dark clothing. [00:49.18]Police launched a search for the suspect, who fled the area. [00:53.69]He was identified as Vester Flanigan, [00:57.40]a former employee of the television station where the two victims had worked. [01:02.74]Officials say the suspect shot himself when police found him on a road outside Washington, D.C. [01:10.57]He was at first reported to have died. [01:14.34]But it was learned later that he survived his own gunshot [01:19.26]and was taken to a hospital in "very critical condition." [01:23.31]Vester Flanigan also was known as Bryce Williams. [01:28.00]Two social media accounts linked to that name were used after the shooting [01:33.27]to publicize images from the attack. [01:36.40]The shooting happened early Wednesday [01:39.20]as the television station was broadcasting a ¡®live' video feed from the news crew. [01:45.46] Another reporter for the station said, [01:48.09]"We have no idea what happened, [01:51.04]they were out covering a feature story - they were not covering protests or demonstrations." [01:57.00]The general manager of WDBJ, Jeffrey Marks, [02:01.64]appeared during the broadcast after the attack. [02:05.15]"We heard screaming," he said. "We heard nothing. And then the camera fell."
