[00:13.92]The heavy rains killed at least 12 people in Peru, the Associated Press reported. [00:23.52]It said the water, much of it dirty, now threatens to flood the city. [00:32.60]Peruvian officials said on Thursday they expect [00:37.48]the extreme weather to continue for another two weeks. [00:43.72]Weather experts are blaming the intense rains on the weather event called El Ni?o. [00:52.12]It produces a warming of surface waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean. [01:00.20]To date, the storms are reported to have killed more than 60 people [01:07.16]and destroyed 12,000 homes across Peru this year. [01:13.76]President Pedro Pablo Kuczynski has declared a state of emergency in the affected areas. [01:24.72]He said the government is prepared to provide [01:29.24]shelter and assistance to those left homeless by the storms. [01:36.68]Schools nationwide have suspended classes. [01:41.21]In the past three days, the rains and mudslides [01:47.12]have brought severe destruction to Peru. [01:51.62]And, the storms have caught people in Lima by surprise. [01:59.44]The city, where it almost never rains, is home to 10 million people. [02:08.12]One extreme incident happened about 50 kilometers south of downtown Lima. [02:17.52]Shocked city residents watched and captured video on their mobile phones [02:24.84]as a woman escaped from a mixture of mud, wood and farm animals. [02:34.32]Evangelina Chamorro had just left her two daughters at school [02:41.24]when, soon after, she and her husband were pulled into a landslide. [02:49.64]They were feeding their pigs when the landslide seized control of them. [02:56.88]Armando Rivera, Chamorro's husband, told a Peruvian radio station [03:04.60]that he and his wife climbed a tree but the tree broke in two. [03:12.32]They held on to each other's hands, [03:15.60]but Chamorro eventually lost hold and got separated. [03:22.32]Then, Chamorro appeared near a bridge, lifting herself from a flood of debris [03:30.68]and walking toward land covered head to toe in mud. [03:36.38]"There's a person there!" an observer cried out. [03:42.72]Chamorro collapsed as she reached land [03:46.95]and was quickly carried by several men to an emergency vehicle. [03:54.96]She suffered only minor injuries. [03:59.84]Last week, during heavy rainfall, more than 15 people were killed [04:07.12]when a bus fell into a ravine in central Peru, Alliance France-Presse reported. [04:16.84]This week in Lima, the rising Huaycoloro River [04:22.68]washed away two trucks and nearly destroyed a bridge. [04:29.32]Seven of the nation's most dangerous criminals were temporarily transported [04:36.76]to another detention center after a river near the prison threatened to overflow. [04:46.16]President Kuczynski said in a statement Wednesday [04:50.88]that Peruvians should not take unnecessary risks. [04:57.08]He urged them to avoid flooded roads and weak bridges.
