[00:09.72]Seven people were killed and more than 50 others injured [00:16.40]on or near the world-famous London Bridge. [00:23.48]It started when three men drove a van into people walking on the bridge. [00:32.20]The men then got out of the vehicle and ran to a nearby market and began stabbing people. [00:41.76]The victims reportedly included British nationals and foreigners. [00:49.12]London police killed three attackers. [00:54.64]At least 10 people have been detained as part of the investigation. [01:02.08]The Islamic State group claims responsibility for the attack. [01:10.00]The violence came less than a week before Britain's parliamentary elections. [01:18.19]Political campaigning restarted on Monday after a one-day suspension after the attack. [01:29.52]It was Britain's third terrorist attack in less than three months. [01:36.44]On May 22, a suicide bomber killed 22 people at a concert in the city of Manchester. [01:48.12]In March, five people died in an attack on London's Westminster Bridge. [01:57.20]The attacks turned much attention in the election campaign to national security issues. [02:06.81]British Prime Minister Theresa May condemned the latest violence. [02:15.40]She said that, in addition to being an attack on London and the United Kingdom, [02:22.92]it was also one "on the free world." [02:28.36]May said there was no clear evidence that the three attacks were operationally connected. [02:37.36]But she said they were "bound together by the evil ideology of Islamist extremism." [02:46.68]She said she believed there is "far too much tolerance for extremism" in Britain. [02:56.85]"We need to be more robust in identifying [03:02.20]and stamping out extremism in public service and across society... [03:09.68]it's time to say enough is enough." [03:15.48]May hopes to use the elections this Thursday [03:19.72]to continue serving as prime minister and leader of the ruling Conservative Party. [03:27.71]At the time she called for the vote last April, [03:32.80]she was considered the favorite against Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn. [03:40.48]But the race has grown much closer in recent weeks. [03:47.00]Public opinion surveys show May's Conservatives are leading Labour [03:53.36]by between one and 12 points. [03:58.00]Earlier surveys did not correctly predict the result of Britain's vote [04:04.56]to leave the European Union (EU) a year ago. [04:12.04]May's government has been working with police on security measures [04:17.72]to make the voting safe. [04:21.16]She stated that "violence can never be allowed to disrupt the democratic process." [04:30.16]Corbyn has criticized May's record on security issues. [04:36.76]He said he supported calls for her resignation [04:41.44]for ordering cuts in police forces while she served as Britain's home secretary. [04:49.84]However, Corbyn said the best way to get May out is for people to go out and vote. [04:59.24]"There's an election on Thursday, that's the chance," he said. [05:05.94]The Labour Party has promised to increase the number of police officers [05:13.32]and to strengthen neighborhood security programs to fight terror. [05:20.72]May said Corbyn is unable to guarantee Britain's security [05:26.36]at a time of such increased threats. [05:30.84]"We have given increased powers to the police [05:35.80]to be able to deal with terrorists [05:39.00]- powers which Jeremy Corbyn has boasted he has always opposed," she said. [05:47.49]May said Monday that Britain's anti-terrorism operations were fully financed. [05:57.34]But London Mayor Sadiq Khan, a Labour member, [06:03.28]said his city had been forced to cut about $775 million for police from its budget. [06:14.48]"We have had to close police stations, [06:17.72]sell police buildings and we've lost thousands of police staff." [06:24.92]In addition to setting anti-terror policies, [06:29.28]the election winner will be responsible for negotiating Britain's withdrawal from the EU. [06:38.40]Other major issues during the campaign have been the state-run [06:43.56]National Health Service, immigration and the economy. [06:50.68]I'm Bryan Lynn. [06:52.56]更多听力请访问51VOA.COM
