[00:15.59]The court said Monday it will consider the case in October after its summer break. [00:25.44]The Trump administration had requested that the ban be put in place [00:31.35]while the case is considered in the courts. [00:36.48]The restrictions halted travel from Libya, Iran, Somalia, [00:43.15]Sudan, Syria and Yemen for 90 days. [00:50.44]It also barred all refugees from entering the United States. [00:57.44]The latest travel ban came about through an executive order signed by Trump. [01:05.68]But it was blocked by lower courts. [01:09.76]In its 6 to 3 ruling, [01:12.48]the Supreme Court made an exception for one group of foreigners. [01:18.48]It said the travel ban cannot be enforced against any "foreign nationals [01:25.40]who have a credible claim of a bona fide relationship [01:30.76]with a person or entity" in the U.S. [01:36.40]The court also said it would allow a 120-day ban on all refugees [01:43.12]entering the United States to go into effect with the same exception. [01:50.76]Three of the court's conservative justices said they would have allowed the full travel bans. [02:00.00]Justice Clarence Thomas said the government's interest in ensuring national security [02:07.84]should outweigh any hardship to people denied entry into the U.S. [02:16.16]The court's decision was seen as a victory for Trump, [02:20.72]who had repeatedly criticized federal courts for blocking his order. [02:28.28]He has said the temporary travel ban was necessary [02:32.76]to keep dangerous people out of the country [02:36.20]while stronger vetting policies were created. [02:40.58]Trump praised Monday's Supreme Court decision, [02:45.72]calling it a "clear victory for our national security." [02:50.20]In a statement, he said his "number one responsibility" is to keep Americans safe. [02:59.52]Some immigration lawyers said the limited nature of the ban [03:04.56]raises questions about how much impact it will have. [03:09.16]They noted that most people coming to study, work or visit family members in the U.S. [03:17.72]already have sufficient relationships with others already in the country. [03:25.72]Even though the Supreme Court is expected to hear the travel order case in October, [03:32.80]it noted that the case could be moot at that time. [03:37.60]This is because measures in the order are meant to be temporary, [03:43.36]while the government reviews its security procedures. [03:48.12]Trump said last week the travel ban would take effect 72 hours after being cleared by courts. [03:57.48]A statement by the Department of Homeland Security [04:02.08]said the order will be implemented "professionally, [04:06.56]with clear and sufficient public notice, particularly to potentially affected travelers."
