[00:13.96]The Norwegian Nobel Committee is giving the prize [00:18.32]to the International Campaign [00:21.44]to Abolish Nuclear Weapons, or ICAN. [00:27.64]The head of the committee, Berit Reiss-Andersen, [00:31.59]made the announcement on Friday. [00:35.56]She said, "We live in a world where the risk of nuclear weapons being used [00:42.40]is greater than it has been for a long time." [00:48.72]The Nobel committee said ICAN won for its work [00:53.76]to bring attention to the catastrophic humanitarian effects [00:59.32]of any use of nuclear weapons. [01:03.60]The statement also praised the group for "its ground-breaking efforts [01:09.56]to achieve a treaty-based prohibition of such weapons." [01:16.04]ICAN describes itself as a coalition [01:20.08]of non-government groups in more than 100 countries. [01:26.56]It began in Australia and was officially launched in Vienna in 2007. [01:36.76]ICAN's main goal is to support enactment [01:41.28]of a United Nations treaty banning nuclear weapons. [01:47.40]The treaty was approved in New York on July 7, 2017. [01:54.92]The agreement, however, did not include nuclear powers, [02:00.40]such as Britain, China, France, Russia and the United States. [02:09.88]The peace prize announcement comes as U.S. President Donald Trump [02:16.04]has threatened Iran and North Korea over their nuclear activities. [02:24.20]President Trump told the U.N. General Assembly last month [02:29.79]that he may be forced to "totally destroy" North Korea [02:35.80]because of its nuclear program. [02:39.88]U.S. officials now say Trump is likely to decertify [02:46.52]the international nuclear agreement with Iran. [02:52.40]He has called the agreement the "worst deal ever negotiated." [03:00.36]The president is expected to announce his plans in a speech next week. [03:09.48]The officials expect him to say [03:13.24]the deal is not in the U.S. national interest. [03:19.28]This would not cancel the 2015 agreement, [03:24.12]but instead return it to Congress. [03:29.16]Lawmakers would then have 60 days to decide [03:34.32]whether to re-establish sanctions [03:37.76]that were suspended under the agreement. [03:42.84]A decertification could possibly lead to talks [03:48.28]on renegotiating the deal, although Iranian President [03:54.32]Hassan Rouhani has said that is not under consideration.
