[00:08.20]Trump announced the change in a message on the social media network Twitter early Tuesday. [00:15.80]The announcement came four hours after Tillerson returned to Washington from a trip to Africa. [00:25.24]Trump said he would nominate Mike Pompeo, [00:28.76]the director of the Central Intelligence Agency, to replace Tillerson. [00:35.40]The move comes as the administration prepares for important talks with North Korea. [00:44.52]"Mike Pompeo, Director of the CIA, will become our new Secretary of State," Trump tweeted. [00:53.13]"He will do a fantastic job! Thank you to Rex Tillerson for his service! [01:01.56]Gina Haspel will become the new Director of the CIA, [01:07.16]and the first woman so chosen. Congratulations to all!" [01:13.62]Both appointments must be confirmed by the Senate. [01:19.24]Speaking this morning, the president said he and Tillerson "disagreed on things," [01:26.84]including their opinions about the Iran nuclear deal. [01:32.56]For months, officials have spoken about Trump's dissatisfaction with Tillerson [01:39.00]although Tillerson insisted he did not plan to leave. [01:45.12]Rumors about disagreements between Trump and Tillerson began spreading last year. [01:53.56]In October, NBC News reported that Tillerson called the president a "moron," [02:00.20]something Tillerson never actually denied. [02:04.64]Tillerson continued to insist his relationship with the president was solid [02:11.20]and denied rumors of problems between them. [02:16.16]Two officials familiar with the situation said [02:20.20]that Tillerson had been fired by Trump on Friday, while in Africa. [02:26.80]However, that was not clear as Tillerson returned to Washington early Tuesday from Nigeria. [02:37.12]But Tillerson had cut short his trip by one night. [02:42.04]He told reporters he had been sick in Africa and had not slept well [02:48.24]because of urgent issues, including the North Korea announcement. [02:55.36]"I felt like, look, I just need to get back," Tillerson said. [03:02.08]One top Trump administration official said dismissing Tillerson [03:07.48]had been discussed at many levels for a long time. [03:12.88]The official said the situation with North Korea [03:17.12]and the invitation to meet brought more urgency to the decision. [03:24.52]Two officials said Trump wanted to have a new team in place [03:29.44]before the meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un and also before trade talks. [03:38.64]The officials were not authorized to speak publicly and demanded that their names not be released. [03:47.52]Tillerson also was known for his ties with Russia and Russian President Vladimir Putin. [03:56.12]He developed the ties as an executive for U.S. oil company Exxon. [04:02.68]Tillerson joined a long list of senior officials [04:08.36]who have either resigned or been fired since Trump took office in January 2017. [04:18.52]Others include strategist Steve Bannon, [04:23.08]national security adviser Michael Flynn, [04:27.52]FBI Director James Comey, [04:31.84]White House chief of staff Reince Priebus, [04:36.52]communications director Anthony Scaramucci, [04:41.12]and press secretary Sean Spicer. [04:45.56]Recently, staff secretary Rob Porter, communications director Hope Hicks [04:52.64]and economic adviser Gary Cohn have resigned from the administration. [05:01.56]I'm Mario Ritter.
