[00:17.42]But the big news is the high number of women nominees, [00:22.96]after being largely left out last year. [00:27.06]The Recording Academy announced the nominations Friday morning. [00:32.96]It named Lamar eight times, [00:37.01]including seven nominations for Black Panther: [00:41.66]The Album, Music From and Inspired By. [00:46.31]It is among eight album of the year nominations. [00:51.35]A record five of the other nominations went to female artists. [00:58.07]They are Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Janelle Monae, H.E.R. and Brandi Carlile. [01:14.18]Artists Drake and Post Malone are also in the running. [01:20.40]The Panther nomination gives Lamar another chance [01:25.52]to win an album of the year award. [01:28.81]He has been nominated three times but has never won. [01:34.06]His most recent loss was in February, [01:37.38]when his critically praised DAMN fell short to Bruno Mars' 24K Magic. [01:45.84]Two months later, however, Lamar won a Pulitzer Prize for DAMN. [01:52.03]He is the first popular music artist to win the honor. [01:58.46]Lamar's Top 10 hit, All the Stars, assisted by artist SZA, [02:05.98]is nominated for both record and song of the year. [02:11.16]Five other songs scored nominations in both categories, [02:16.25]including Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's Shallow from the film A Star Is Born; [02:24.61]Childish Gambino's This Is America; [02:28.32]and Drake's God's Plan. [02:31.74]The other two nominations went to Zedd, Maren Morris [02:36.89]and Grey for The Middle and The Joke from Brandi Carlile. [02:43.34]Ella Mai's Boo'd Up and Shawn Mendes' In My Blood [02:48.96]earned song of the year nominations, [02:52.56]while Post Malone's Rockstar and Cardi B's I Like It, [02:57.65]featuring Bad Bunny and J Balvin, [03:00.74]complete the nominees for record of the year. [03:03.92]Just behind Lamar in number of nominations is Drake, [03:09.41]who earned seven. [03:11.03]Although he was nominated for album of the year, surprisingly, [03:16.85]he did not win a place in the best rap album competition. [03:21.76]Women made a big hit in the best new artist competition. [03:27.15]Six of the eight nominees are female: H.E.R., Chloe x Halle, [03:34.70]Dua Lipa, Margo Price, Bebe Rexha and Jorja Smith. [03:41.07]Rock band Greta Van Fleet and country singer Luke Combs [03:46.42]also earned nominations. [03:49.30]Recording Academy chief Neil Portnow was criticized earlier this year [03:55.70]when he blamed women for their lack of representation at the Grammys. [04:01.76]He said women need to "step up" [04:04.89]if they wanted more nominations in the top categories. [04:09.96]Later, Portnow described his statement as a "poor choice of words." [04:15.94]The academy launched an operation centered on inclusion and diversity. [04:23.15]Portnow also announced he would be leaving the academy in 2019. [04:29.68]The Recording Academy will present the 2019 Grammy Awards [04:35.30]in Los Angeles, California, on February 10. [04:40.03]The ceremony will be broadcast live. [04:43.50]I'm Caty Weaver.
