[00:08.08]As Homeland Security Secretary, [00:11.28]Kirstjen Nielsen was the government official [00:14.16]responsible for border security. [00:18.24]Her resignation comes at a time [00:20.84]when President Donald Trump is angry [00:23.93]over the number of Central Americans [00:26.78]crossing the U.S. border from Mexico. [00:31.32]Trump announced on Sunday [00:33.60]that U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner [00:37.52]Kevin McAleenan will be acting head of Homeland Security. [00:42.96]McAleenan is well respected by many members of [00:46.72]Congress and the president's administration. [00:50.96]The decision to name a top immigration officer to the job [00:55.20]shows how important the issue of border security is to Trump. [01:01.56]The Department of Homeland Security [01:04.08]is a relatively new federal agency. [01:07.96]It was created after the September 11, 2001 attacks. [01:14.52]"It is the right time for me to step aside," [01:18.04]Nielsen wrote in her letter of resignation. [01:22.08]The Associated Press (AP) reports [01:24.41]that her resignation was not expected. [01:28.16]Just two days before she resigned, [01:31.12]Nielsen traveled to the U.S. southern border with Trump. [01:35.50]They met with border officers and local law enforcement. [01:41.80]During the meeting, Nielsen agreed with Trump's comments [01:46.08]that there was a crisis at the border. [01:50.04]Later, she and the president [01:52.48]visited part of a rebuilt barrier along the border. [01:57.56]She returned to Washington immediately after the visit, [02:01.68]while Trump continued on to California and Nevada. [02:07.60]Nielsen has been frustrated by what she saw [02:10.68]as a lack of support from other government offices, [02:14.60]The Associated Press reported. [02:17.76]The AP story also said she was also angered [02:21.08]by Trump aides interfering with her leadership decisions. [02:25.44]Nielsen went into the White House on Sunday [02:29.12]to meet with Trump. [02:31.44]At that meeting, she resigned. [02:34.40]People speaking with the AP say [02:37.44]she was not forced to resign. [02:40.80]She has said she will leave her position on Wednesday. [02:45.88]Nielsen led Homeland Security since December 2017. [02:52.16]McAleenan has helped shape many of [02:54.97]the Trump administration's policies on immigration. [02:59.24]He is said to be liked by congressional leaders, [03:02.64]the administration and Homeland Security officials. [03:07.28]It is unclear, however, [03:09.20]if he will have much more of an effect on issues at the border. [03:15.28]Efforts by the Trump administration to remake border security [03:19.48]have been overturned by court rulings. [03:24.08]Representative Joaquin Castro of Texas, [03:27.32]chairman of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, [03:30.64]called McAleenan's appointment "deeply disturbing." [03:35.88]Castro, a member of the Democratic Party, [03:39.24]said that McAleenan's support for Trump policies [03:43.04]hurt "families and children at the border." [03:46.80]Arrests along the southern border [03:49.74]have increased sharply over the past few months. [03:54.64]Border agents are estimated to have made 100,000 arrests [03:59.67]and denials of entry at the border in March. [04:03.62]More than half were families with children.
