一些圆形谷仓并不是真正的圆形。它们只是看上去是圆形，实际上是由很多平板并排地放在一起的。
早期的版本是两层的。第一层用来养牛，上面一层用来存放干草。随后的设计为干草留出了更大的空间，牛的旁边多出了饲养场所。
然而，到了30年代，建造圆形谷仓的农民越来越少。一些人说，这需要更多的时间和技巧。其他人则不同意。无论如何，这都不是进行争论的好时间——这正是大萧条时期，非常艰难。
