科学家仍然在继续探寻对抗疟疾更好的利器。全世界每年感染疟疾的总人数高达数亿人，死亡人数高达100万，其中大部分在非洲。疟疾造成的经济损失大约占据非洲每年经济总量的百分之一。
George Dimopoulos是马里兰州巴尔的摩约翰-霍普金疟疾研究中心的副教授。
George Dimopoulos：“地球上大约42%的人口居住在可以传播疟疾的蚊虫存在的地区，所有这些人都有感染疟疾的风险。悲哀的是，因疟疾死亡的人口大多数是儿童，因为他们的免疫系统不够发达，不能抵抗疾病感染。”
疟疾由一种叫做疟原虫的寄生虫造成。这种有机体通过蚊虫叮咬传染给人。疟疾是可以治疗的，但是在很多地区，疟原虫已经对许多药物产生了抵抗力。
George Dimopoulos和他的研究小组正在研究使蚊虫抵抗寄生虫感染的方法。世界上共有数百种蚊虫，大部分不传播疟疾。其中一些蚊虫还拥有杀死疟原虫的免疫系统。
George Dimopoulos：“我们对这些杀死疟原虫的免疫反应非常感兴趣。因为我们认为，一旦我们了解了它的工作原理，我们就可以对蚊虫进行基因转变，将能够传播疟疾的蚊虫转变为不能传播疟疾的蚊虫。”
研究人员已经研究出了对三种能够传播疟疾的蚊虫进行基因改变的方法。这种改变使得他们的免疫系统袭击疟原虫，阻止疟原虫的发展。其他研究人员正在研究怎样使这些通过基因转变的昆虫在整个蚊虫种群中扩散。
Dimopoulos教授表示，道路依然很漫长，但是当前疟疾研究的前景非常乐观。
一种新的疫苗正在最后测试阶段。目前为止已经证实在半数接种疫苗的人群中能够有效预防疟疾——这比以往的任何比例都高。
在赞比亚Macha疟疾研究所，研究人员发现了鉴别疟疾更简单的方法。这中测试方法使用唾液代替血液来诊断疟疾感染情况。
目前的疟疾防控主要基于喷洒杀虫剂和使用蚊帐。但是George Dimopoulos表示，疟疾必须用药物，疫苗和蚊帐——研究人员可以发现的一切方法了对抗。
