据估计,世界上每年有550万人被蛇咬伤。专家表示,每年有数十万人死于蛇毒。
如果未进行治疗或治疗不当,可能要求切除被咬伤的脚或手臂。每年大约40万例截肢是由于蛇伤引起。
去年,世界卫生组织首次将蛇咬伤加入“被忽视的热带疾病”名单,目的是给予该问题更大的关注。
科学家了解大约3,000种蛇,大约600种是有毒的,大多出没在热带的农村地区。
亚洲和非洲蛇咬伤的人数最多——每年总统有400万。拉丁美洲和南太平洋岛屿紧随其后。
受害者人数最多的是农业工作者。在渔夫,猎人和孩子中,蛇咬伤也比较普遍。许多受害者生活在医疗资源贫乏或没有医疗系统的地区,通常不能进行抗毒治疗。
抗毒液素是唯一的治疗方法。但是专家表示,抗毒液素技术及其使用方法需要进行改进。问题包括缺少生产商,治疗成本高昂。
同时,当地医疗工作者普遍缺乏使用抗毒液素的知识。如果使用不谨慎,治疗可能会导致危险甚至致命的反应。
抗毒液素中含有动物蛋白,例如马或羊体内的蛋白。这些动物被重复多次注射一种或多种不同的毒液,产生免疫性。柳叶刀医疗期刊最近发表了一系列关于蛇咬伤预防和治疗的报告。英国牛津大学的David Warrell是其中一位作者。他称赞了世界卫生组织为抗毒液素的生产,调控和控制设定惯例的做法。但是他说,必须采取更多的措施。
这些报告的作者表示,社区教育项目应该交给人们怎样避开蛇,预防蛇咬伤。他们还建议采取其他预防措施,例如为农田工作者提供保护性的靴子,不要在地上睡觉。
同样重要的是,提供相关信息,例如蛇最有可能在什么地方出没,什么时间最活跃。
