慢性阻塞性肺疾病（COPD）阻止空气在肺部的流通，导致呼吸困难。导致这种疾病的首要原因就是吸烟。美国国立卫生研究院（ National Institutes of Health ， NIH ）称，对肺部的损害不能修复，也没有治疗方法。

该研究小组调查了一项挪威研究对954名患有COPD的患者的调查结果。Inga-Cecilie Soerheim协助了这项研究。Soerheim医生说，调查结果表明，女性和男性患有COPD的严重性相同。但是相比之下，女性吸烟者更年轻，而且吸烟次数要少的多。
