The United Nations Children's Fund says some Haitian children are missing from hospitals, raising concerns of child trafficking after last week's earthquake separated thousands of families.

UNICEF Senior Regional Adviser for Child Protection, Jean-Claude Legrand, says the group has documented about 15 disappearances. He said there are indications of people crossing into the Dominican Republic with children and of planes loading children at the airport.Legrand said UNICEF and its partners have set up a surveillance system to register disappearances and try to prevent them.

UNICEF has also set up 20 centers where children can get care. Aid workers at the sites are working to identify unaccompanied children and reunite them with their families.Even before the quake, children in Haiti were at great risk of being trafficked or enslaved. UNICEF says there is documented evidence showing many children have been taken out of the country illegally.
