U.S. President Barack Obama is hoping to show Americans that he plans to fulfill promises in his State of the Union address to create more jobs.
The president travels to (the southern U.S. state of) Florida Thursday, where he plans to award $8 billion in economic stimulus funds for the construction of high-speed rail lines. Obama administration officials say the money will help create new jobs.
During his first State of the Union speech Wednesday night, Mr. Obama urged Congress to send him a jobs bill "without delay." He said lawmakers must address the economic problems that Americans have faced for years.
Reaction to the president's address has been mixed.
Members of the president's Democratic Party have been praising the speech for its upbeat vision. But in the Republican Party's response, the governor of (the eastern U.S. state) of Virginia, Bob McDonnell, said Mr. Obama was trying to have government do too much.
