Thailand's highest court says it will confiscate $1.4 billion of ousted Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra's assets. The Thai Supreme Court Friday order that amount seized from the gains made by the sale of his family's telecommunications firm (Shin Corp). Mr. Thaksin's $2.3 billion fortune was frozen after he was toppled for alleged corruption in a 2006 coup.

In its reading of a lengthy verdict, the court said the former telecommunications mogul illegally concealed his ownership of shares in the company while in office, and shaped government policies in order to benefit the company. The court said the assets gained before Mr. Thaksin became prime minister will not be confiscated, but it is not clear if they will be released to him. Thailand's ousted leader watched the proceedings from his exile home in Dubai. In a videotaped message, he called the ruling "very political."
