Battered European stocks markets began to recover Monday, after worries about the European debt crisis hurt Asian stocks and drove the value of the euro to its lowest level in four years.

Investors were apparently cheered by positive earning news from some major companies, which helped the euro rise somewhat from its recent lows.

Stocks in Asia and world oil prices fell Monday as investors expressed concern that cutting the spending of heavily-indebted European nations like Greece will hurt economic growth and corporate profits.

The fall came even though European nations have assembled a $1 trillion rescue package, and are working to slash expenses to reduce their debts.

Spending cuts in Greece recently sparked protests that sometimes turned violent, raising questions about the government's ability to manage the crisis.
