India's prime minister has expressed his commitment to normalizing relations with his country's neighbor and longtime rival, Pakistan.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Monday that India is willing to discuss all "outstanding issues," but that a lack of trust is the main obstacle to improvements in relations between India and Pakistan.

Mr. Singh said he believes India cannot realize its full economic potential unless it has the best possible relations with its neighbors.

In response to the Indian leader's comments, Pakistan Foreign Ministry spokesman Abdul Basit said it was important to build trust so the two countries can live in peace and prosperity. Basit added that India and Pakistan need to have a sustained and meaningful engagement.

Prime Minister Singh met with his Pakistani counterpart, Yousuf Raza Gilani, last month on the sidelines of a regional summit in Bhutan. Their countries' foreign secretaries are scheduled to hold talks in Islamabad in July.
