North Korea says it is scrapping military agreements with South Korea aimed at preventing border confrontations as the two sides engage in a dispute over the sinking of a South Korean warship.

North Korea's state-run news agency said Thursday the country is nullifying a pact that seeks to avoid accidental naval battles along the two Koreas' disputed western sea boundary. It warned that South Korean vessels violating the disputed border will face immediate attack.

North Korea also says its military is repealing safety guarantees for South Koreans crossing the heavily-militarized land border.

Pyongyang has reacted angrily to sanctions imposed by South Korea in retaliation for a torpedo attack that sank the Cheonan in March, killing 46 sailors. International investigators blame the attack on a North Korean submarine, a charge Pyongyang denies.

South Korea's navy, in a show of strength, staged an anti-submarine exercise Thursday in waters south of the disputed maritime border.
