Israel has agreed to ease its blockade of the Gaza Strip and allow more humanitarian aid into the Hamas-ruled territory.

Government spokesman Mark Regev says the plan approved Thursday will allow more goods to reach Gaza and expand the flow of supplies for use in civilian projects under international supervision. He says materials that could be used to make weapons will still be banned.

Both Hamas and the rival Palestinian leadership in the West Bank dismissed the Israeli action, saying it does not go far enough. A Jordanian government spokesman echoed that position.

Israel came under intense international pressure to end the blockade after its forces intercepted a Gaza-bound aid flotilla last month and killed nine pro-Palestinian activists on one of the vessels.
