Sri Lanka opposes the creation of a United Nations panel to investigate whether human rights abuses were committed during the final months of the country's war with Tamil Tiger rebels.

Sri Lankan government spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella on Wednesday called the panel "unwarranted and unacceptable."

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed the three-member panel Tuesday and asked it to determine whether any rights violations took place during Sri Lanka's civil war, which ended with the defeat of the Tamil rebels last May. The U.N. says more than 7,000 civilians died in the final stages of the conflict.

Sri Lanka's foreign ministry said Wednesday the U.N. decision has "the potential for exploitation by vested interests hostile to the process of reconciliation." Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa has established a commission to examine war crimes allegations.
