Researchers are reporting a possible breakthrough in the fight against AIDS, with the unveiling of a vaginal gel that has sharply reduced the chances of women getting HIV from an infected partner.

The results of clinical trials on the gel are to be formally released at the 18th International AIDS Conference in Vienna later Tuesday.

Scientists from South Africa say that women using the gel, which contained the drug tenofovir, had a 50 percent lower infection rate after one year compared to women given a placebo gel. The infection rate was 39 percent lower after two and a half years.

UN-AIDS chief Michel Sidibe says the new vaginal gel is going to revolutionize HIV prevention for women.

This is the first time researchers have made a successful microbicide -- a substance inserted into the body before sex to prevent transmission of the HIV virus.

However, experts caution that further scrutiny is needed of the microbicide's safety and effectiveness before it can be released to the public.
