British Prime Minister David Cameron has promised to fight for Turkey's stalled bid to join the European Union.
 
Speaking Tuesday in Ankara, Mr. Cameron said he feels "passionately" about welcoming Turkey to the bloc, and he expressed anger about the delay.
 
The British leader had strong words for those who oppose the bid, saying they are protectionists or have a prejudiced misunderstanding of Islam.
 
France and Germany have led the opposition.Turkey began talks to join the EU in 2005.
 
Mr. Cameron stressed Turkey's importance as a strategic partner in the Middle East both in terms of its economic potential and diplomatic influence.
 
The British prime minister said he wants to double the amount of trade between Britain and Turkey in the next five years.
