Russian President Dmitri Medvedev has signed a new law giving the country's security agency greater powers.

The law signed on Thursday gives the Federal Security Service, the successor of the Soviet era KGB, authority to detain or issue warnings to people it believes are about to commit a crime.

Critics say the new law will allow the FSB to intimidate critics of the government.

Supporters say the new measure will help reduce crime and increase awareness about illegal activities.

Under the new law, suspects could be fined and or detained up to 15 days.
