The United Nations is making an emergency appeal for $460 million to help Pakistan deal with a flooding disaster that has affected more than 14 million people.

The world body said Wednesday the aid will enable U.N. agencies and non-governmental organizations to support the Pakistani government in meeting the immediate needs of flood victims.

The United Nations says that as of Monday, international donors had contributed or pledged $129 million to Pakistan. It says the relief operation needs to be scaled up "massively" to provide shelter, food, water and medical care for six to seven million Pakistanis.

The United Nations says the floods have killed an estimated 1,600 and destroyed or damaged about 288,000 homes primarily in the provinces of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, Punjab and Sindh.

The crisis began in late July when heavy rain caused major rivers in northern Pakistan to burst their banks and send floodwaters southward along the Indus river. More flooding is expected in southern Pakistan in the coming days.
