Hurricane Earl is moving north after churning off the coast of North Carolina's Outer Banks, bringing rough seas, rains and powerful winds to large parts of the eastern United States.
At last report, the National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 205 kilometers northeast of Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, with winds of up to 165 kilometers per hour.
Hurricane and tropical storm warnings and watches are in effect along the coast as far north as Maine. The governors of North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts have declared states of emergency.
Residents have been warned to take precautions against dangerous winds, storm surges and heavy rainfall.
Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from North Carolina's barrier islands, but some residents hunkered down at home to ride out the storm.
Earl is traveling in the Atlantic Ocean parallel to the coast.
