China, US Hail Closer Ties

06 September, 2010

Officials of China and the United States are congratulating each other on the closer ties between the two countries after strains earlier in the year.

A top official of China's ruling Communist Party, Li Yuanchao, said Monday there had been "some disturbances" in relations between the two powers but now relations are "back on a sound track."

He made the remarks to two U.S. officials, Deputy National Security Adviser Thomas Donilon and National Economic Council Chairman Larry Summers, who are visiting Beijing for four days of talks.

Summers told Chinese officials that U.S. President Barack Obama has emphasized the importance of "a very strong relationship" with China and the upcoming visit of Chinese President Hu Jintao to the U.S.

Summers said the two countries "benefit from candid conversation" so the two global powers can "understand each other's thinking."
