Chinese President, US Officials Hold Talks

Chinese President Hu Jintao is advocating better relations with the United States after meeting with two senior officials with the Obama administration.

Mr. Hu held talks Wednesday in Beijing with White House economic adviser Larry Summers and Tom Donilon, deputy National Security Adviser for U.S. President Barack Obama. The meeting capped three days of talks between the U.S. officials and high-ranking Chinese officials.

The Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post says it has learned from unnamed Chinese officials that both governments have agreed to resume military talks. China suspended the talks to protest the U.S. arms sale to Taiwan.

Patrick Chovanec, a professor at a Beijing's Tsinghua University, tells VOA restarting the talks is "a step in the right direction." He says both militaries need to be in close contact if they are to respond to a possible crisis in North Korea or the South China Sea.
