U.S. President Barack Obama is on a long-awaited visit to Indonesia, where he agreed to build a "comprehensive partnership" with the world's most populous Muslim majority nation.

Mr. Obama arrived in Jakarta Tuesday for a one-day visit, where he spent four years of his childhood in the 1960s.

At a joint news conference with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the two leaders announced an agreement to boost cooperation in trade, education, clean energy and security.

Mr. Obama said the United States will stand with Indonesia in "good times and in bad times," a reference to natural disasters that have killed hundreds of people in the country in recent weeks.

Ongoing volcanic eruptions on (Indonesia's main) Java island may force Mr. Obama to cut short his brief stay in Jakarta by several hours.
